Discretion, or Lack Thereof

These lines from "A Well Worn Story" by Dorothy Parker describe me well, don't you think?

I wore my heart like a wet, red stain
On the breast of a velvet gown.

A bit harsh, Anonymous. Unless I mistake your meaning. Would you care to elaborate?

oh dear. Dorothy Parker. Not a good sign. Something happen? Darling, as much as I enjoy working with the male of the species at Big Bookstore, I really think you could do a LOT better, relationship-wise, than the boys at Big Bookstore. (I can hear the howls of protest now, but I'll stand by my statement) Not what you want to hear, but maybe what you need to hear. We all think you're fantastic, you need a fantastic guy. And finally, not to sound like a self-help book or anything, but you've got to aim higher than your reach if you want the stars and the moon.

Really, Anonymous. (I can call you Anonymous, can't I? I feel so close to you.) I have heard this "you can do better" thing before. From the most amazing sources. Usually it's in the form of "you can do better than me." But you really must define "better" for me, because I'm not sure your definition of "better" and mine agree. In fact, I'm most certain they do not. The current object of my affection is intelligent, sweet natured, and incredibly hot. What could possibly be better? A better job? Higher "social status?" Please. Besides, look where it's gotten you.

well, yes, I'm old and callous and jaded. and my experience is exactly why I give unsolicited advice, on the slight chance that someone else might be spared some pain. It's a hard, cruel world out there, and it's better to go through life with someone than without. Maybe everyone who has told you that you can do better is wrong. Or maybe they see how wonderful you are and how much you deserve a extraordinarily wonderful man.

Well, now I feel like a complete bitch since your response to my post was so lovely. Thank you, Anonymous. FWIW, I shall get that opportunity to find "someone better" since it turns out that the crush has a long-term girlfriend. Of course it also turns out that he's a Republican, so I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed.
