Too Mean

I was introduced to the friend of a co-worker last night. Mimi introduced me this way: "This is [Disgruntled Bookseller]. She's the one who writes the blog." The friend responded, without a moment's hesitation, "Too mean."

I do hope that the readers of this blog understand that the blog is written for a purpose. It's called Disgruntled Bookseller, for Christ's sake. Obviously it has a point of view. And that point of view does not necessarily reflect the totality of my life or my personality. No, it merely reflects the frustrations, and also the joys, generated by my part-time job as a bookseller (and now part-time barista).

I am many things besides a bookseller. I am a loving daughter, sister, and aunt. I'm a good friend to the many people who are kind enough to bestow their friendship upon me. I'm the overly indulgent human being of two coddled felines. I'm a competent lawyer.

Sometimes I am perceived as "mean" to my co-workers at Big Bookstore. Not true. I am impatient. I am demanding. I am emphatic and forceful. I expect everyone to work as hard and as consciensciously as possible. I don't think that's unreasonable. Nor do I think it's mean.

As for the customers, I am as nice to them as they are to me. Often more so. I'd have been fired long ago for poor customer service if I responded to customers with the same level of (non)courtesy that they often tender to me. And that is why, instead, I write about them on the blog.

I like to think of myself as a kind, generous, and charitable person. Sure, I'm assertive and loud and have a tendency to take control of situations. But I am fundamentally nice. I am never mean without provocation or reason, solely for the sake of being mean. If that were the case, well, then this blog would be called "Disgruntled Human Being," no?

(Note to Mimi: Sorry I missed the Going Away Bash. I slept all day. Also, I was surfing the crimson tide, and damn if the sea wasn't rough. Pitiful excuses, I know.)

Hey Disgruntled, I do not think you are mean. Your Blog makes me realize that I am not the only one that feels the way I do about "customorons" and certain "cow workers". Do not change!!!

Totally support you disgruntled, we voice our opinions this way or we pin the customers down on the floor with the barrel of a shiny glock in their mouth. xx

Hi Disgruntled, I notice you have put me in your list of other booksellers who blog. I thank you for including me, but in order for it to get to my blog you have to write it as GerberaDaisyDuke.

mimi would first of all tell you that she dearly missed you at her going away party. I mean. What is a party without you anyway? Missing you because you are surfing the crimson tide is undesirable yet understandable. However, one guest was anxiously waiting to learn the true identity of our beloved DB who speaks for all disgruntled booksellers throughout the world.

So when the queries for OFFICE SUPPLIES, the latest version of "The Merchant of Venice", Herman Hess’s "Siddhartha" written in the original ENGLISH and inquiries as to whether or not John STEINBECK will be coming in for a book signing (if Oprah can get him why can't we?) know that you have spoken for us all.

Next week while my ass is sitting in China I will be fielding statements like "Kansas is in Arizona" and "it is fashionable for men in America to beat their wives” I will be thinking of you and grateful for the experiences I had at Big Bookstore and the wonderful management and cow-workers who helped me keep a straight face and answer in a polite tone while imagining the wonderful blog that will come out of an otherwise frustrating encounter.

I Love you DB and will miss you and late night Chinese food sorely!!!!!

d00dette! Who was the mystery guest and is he single?

I'll miss you too. But you'll be back. Everyone comes back to Big Bookstore eventually.

You aren't mean at all!!! Honest... not mean. We obviously love your writing (or we wouldn't be here) and that is because it is absolutely hilarious! Anyone who doesn't like it can shove it, I say.

PS. Thanks for your comments. :)

Hey there Disgruntled Bookseller. I hate to pressure you (knowing that there are closets to clean and parental units to entertain). However, i thought a topic had been decided upon. With the arrival of royalty fast aproaching (and with that, a need for me to practice the unfamiliar skill of sucking up), I feel the need for a little of the honesty & perspective I can only get from you.
